Peter Smith has in excess of 37 years of experience in Management, Sales and Marketing, Design, Production and Testing at a number of Manufacturing facilities producing Transformers for Transmission and Distribution Systems.
Started own Transformer Consulting Company to provide independent Engineering Services, relating solely to Distribution and Power Transformer products, covering all aspects of Design and Manufacturing Technology.
Projects completed to date include: -
Development of new Power Transformer Technical Specifications for Distribution Authorities and Industrial users, including transformer repairs.
Technical Evaluation of Tenders for both new transformers and transformer Repair and refurbishment projects.
Contract Design Reviews at both Australian and Overseas Power Transformer manufacturers.
Supplier evaluation including factory audits prior to contract award.
Project Management of Emergency 200 MVA 275 kV Generator Transformer installation project following Service Failure.
Investigation and Report on Transformer Service Failures to determine Root Cause and appropriate repair processes.
Investigation and Report on Spare Transformer philosophy of Major Australian Generating Companies.
Witnessing of Critical manufacturing processes and acceptance testing at both Australian and Overseas manufacturer’s works.
Investigation and Report on Transformer Test Room Failures to determine if service life is compromised and ensure Manufacturers’ processes are improved to prevent a reoccurrence.
Condition Assessment of aged transformers.
Draft Transformer Life Management Policies, including Diagnostic Site testing, maintenance and refurbishment processes.
Provide training in transformer and tapchanger construction and operation, voltage regulation, maintenance and life extension.
Responsible for the Management of Sales and
Marketing functions including Tender Submissions and Contract Administration
for the supply of new transformers
and the repair or refurbishment of existing transformers.
Specific responsibilities include development of high-level relationships
with major Customers to ensure that opportunities are maximised in capturing
the future projects.
Determine market segmentation and develop marketing strategy to service
total market but ensure product is sourced from local and regional ABB
Companies.
Identify Competitor market penetration and monitor production capacity
and delivery commitments of all Australian Transformer Manufacturers.
Reinforce Customers perception of ABB being the most technically competent
supplier and implement a strategy where Customers contacted us as primary
supplier of product and services to satisfy their requirements.
An internal
secondment specifically to manage both the Engineering and Production departments
in an existing facility at Hefei in Anhui Province
of P.R. China. This secondment was to expedite the development of the manufacturing
plant to implement new power transformer technology requiring the upgrading
of labour skills, plant and test capability together with production equipment
development.
Responsible for management of all Engineering and Production departments
with ultimate responsibility for achieving budgeted production costs and
timely delivery of all transformers
Responsible for the Management of Customer Order Engineering and Critical Manufacturing Processes at the Power Transformer facility at Moorebank. This role was specifically to implement new transformer technology into the Moorebank facility requiring significant investment in new plant and equipment, introduction of new design and manufacturing processes, in Co-operating with other ABB companies. Invited to join Australian Panel AP12 relating to Transformers of CIGRE, to contribute to Engineering knowledge of this product by Utilities.
Responsible for Management of Design and Drafting departments and specification of all materials and manufacturing processes used to manufacture Power Transformers (up to 600 MVA 500 kV Generator Transformers) at the Moorebank facility. Responsibilities also included technical development and co-ordination of the Power Transformer Design Engineering departments within all of the group’s manufacturing facilities in Wellington (New Zealand), Sydney and Perth.
Responsible for management of the both the Sales and Engineering departments with responsibility for the total range of Oil immersed Distribution transformers, Cast Resin Dry type transformers and other transformers (for special applications) manufactured at Mittagong.
Responsible for Management and Design, Drafting and specification
of all Distribution Transformers manufactured at the Mittagong factory,
together with Engineering responsibility for a range of standard distribution
transformers
being produced at a Western Australian manufacturing facility.
Responsibilities included Customer Order Engineering, Product Development,
Manufacturing Process specification, Quality Control and Testing.
This Company was a “start-up” operation, financed by Sir William
Tyree who started this Company after severing all connection with Tyree
Electrical Company (majority owned by Westinghouse USA).
Customers included both the Electrical Distribution Authorities and a number
of Industrial Customers in the mining, mineral processing and also included
some applications in Tourist Developments.
Responsibility for Contract Management of all Transformers being supplied against Power Station Contracts with Electricity Commission of NSW (now Pacific power/ Macquarie Generation/ Delta Electricity) during the early 1980’s, a period of significant development of the Eraring and Bayswater Power Stations in New South Wales.
Responsibility for preparation of Customer Order Designs and Technical Project Management for Transformer projects up to 375 MVA, 330 kV. Also responsible for preparation of Optimised transformer designs for tender submissions for projects up to 1200 MVA, 500 kV.
Industrial training was integrated into Academic Studies The industrial training encompassed all phases of design, procurement, manufacture and testing of Power Transformers up to 250 MVA, 400 kV and On Load Tap changer Sales and Manufacturing. The training culminated with 15 months in the Transformer Electrical Design Department with full project technical responsibility for specific Customer Orders including preparation of electrical design, approval of major manufacturing drawings and in-factory inspections during critical manufacturing processes.
