LTC position monitors are IEDs that are used for monitoring a transformer’s tap position and changing it remotely based on fluctuations in the power load. The device converts the output of an electromagnetic position or displacement sensor (synchro transmitter) to a user-definable panel display and electrical output. The INCON Model 1250 for example employs a proprietary synchro conversion technique that is performed entirely in preprogrammed software. This approach uses few electrical components, thus ensuring a more stable and reliable output at a very reasonable cost. This device has been established as a utility-industry “standard” that is used to: • Inform dispatchers - real time LTC or regulator position that is transmitted through SCADA to the system dispatch or energy management operation center. • Trigger maintenance orders – every change in tap position or pass-through-neutral can be logged and totaled to schedule maintenance. • Achieve absolute position feedback – these devices provide confirmation that the LTC has moved to the required tap as directed a critical function in the protection of power quality and management of system voltage levels.
